Shaken and Stirred was created to overcome ideological isolationism and bring people from across the spectrum together for raucous debate in a relaxed environment. With no agenda other than to encourage lively and interesting discussion, the evenings thrive on dissent and sangria.
Modelled on the great Parisian salons of the enlightenment, Shaken and Stirred events gypsy throughout metropolitan Sydney presenting unusual speakers on provocative ideas. By deliberately seating ideological opponents adjacent, the events encourage thinkers from all perspectives to challenge their own ideas and those of others.
Shaken and Stirred is deeply opposed to popularity politics and sees itself as the antithesis of activist organisations, in that we will never represent a political position, identify with a cause or even encourage people to agree with us. We believe that good ideas are measured on their outcomes, not on their popularity, and that creativity demands we look beyond our ideological boundaries and challenge our own sacred cows. Shaken and Stirred presents rigorous debate, not a posture of concern.
Furthermore, Shaken and Stirred aims to restore the discussion of ideas to a pleasurable pastime for anyone at any time – down the pub, on the bus, at a party. As such, arguments should never be personal, always respectful, sometimes passionate, usually fun.
Everyone is welcome to attend, but numbers at each event are kept down to facilitate a meaningful exchange of ideas.
The evenings and afternoons are run on a break-even basis and regular pub events are held to make attendance affordable for anyone.
